It is with a heavy heart that I share sad news with our GPA Family today.
Ms. Portia Dawson, longtime GPA community partner and advocate, passed away earlier this week.
On behalf of the Gompers Preparatory Academy community, we send our sincere condolences to Portia Dawson’s family, friends, and colleagues, as well as the dozens of GPA students and staff she has worked with since partnering with our school in 2010.
As Director of Program Partnerships for the San Diego Police Department’s STAR/PAL program, Ms. Portia has mentored hundreds of San Diego students in civic engagement, community service, and leadership– qualities perfectly aligned with the REACH values of GPA.
Her bright smile, engaging personality, and tireless personal dedication to our students and community will be greatly missed.
The GPA Family will carry Ms. Portia’s legacy forever in our hearts and minds.
